Coldean Colts Football Club (Under 10s)

  • 11/03/12 Lewes Bridge Scorpions V Coldean Colts (U10)

    Game 1

Lewes Bridge Scorpions 2 5 Coldean Colts (U10)

First thing, apologies to all who arrived early as I had messed up the time on the site. If any consolation I was the first person there.

This was a great performance by the boys. In my opinion one of the best 'footballing' performances that I have witnessed. This team beat us at home but to this day I am scratching my head as to how that happened as we were by far the better team. We proved that today.

There was some beautiful passing and movement off and on the ball. Their keeper made a wonderful early save from Blain's curling shot. and we set our marker. We could have had more than the 5 but they battled hard in defence and their tall red haired winger was a handful for us, quick and strong he scored a wonderful, almost solo effort. But everyone stepped up and it is a measure of our confidence when we wre comfortable playing the ball back to Aston from defence and holding the ball up in attack and bringing in the on rushing attackers. The result of this being a great goal by Francis and another one that hit the bar. It was great to see us making that kind of space where Francis or Cass can come up from midfiled and have some time to have a crack at goal. Everyone played well it was a tremendous team effort and was probably nice for the boys to be back on a nice small pitch after the previous days efforts on the 11 a side.

    Game 1

Lewes Bridge Scorpions 0 2 Coldean Colts (U10)

I did not see this match as Killian had an early game back in Brighton. I heard we played well here too. It is a great result and I believe Oliver was on the scoresheet twice, great stuff.

Big thanks to all at Lewes and all parents coaches and the boys for some great entertainment.

  • 10/03/12 Coldean Colts U10 V Mile Oak - 11 a side game

Coldean Colts 1 4 Mile Oak

This was a good friendly where we played three twenty minute games. The overall score is not particularly important. What is important is that we learn a bit about 11 a side football. There were some good performances out there but Mile Oak were quicker on the break and quicker to get out from the back to create the offside trap. Football is a very simple game but offside adds a little bit of complexity. We need to understand how we can use the offside trap to our advantage. This, of course, is a bit risky particularly if the forwards are quick. Think Thierry Henry (Incidentally, being Irish, I try to think of him as little as possible from his punching the ball into the Irish net and knocking Ireland out of the World Cup finals). However Henry was an expert at beating the offside trap. The defenders try to get out to move the line of defense as near the half way line as possible but Henry had the ability to just keep on side and with his lightning pace get beyond the defenders who were trying to create the trap. We need to get out from the back quick but be aware of the attackers. Not easy but we need to remind each other at the back to GET OUT when the ball has been cleared out of defence. The forwards also need to time their runs so that they stay onside until the ball is kicked to them and then move back quickly as the opposition defence moves up. This will come in time and if we understand it fully and use it it will be to our advantage. We will get caught sometimes but each time we do we should use the experience for the next game.

The boys will also have realise that the distances to cover are much greater than on a 7 aside pitch so we need to conserve our energy a bit more and to coin a well worn cliche 'let the ball do the work' i.e. accurate passing where the receiver can run on to a ball not have to stop and pick it up from behind him. We should also make use of pace where we can and use the wings etc.

Anyway that is enough of that. All of this will come in time and it is big learning curve but it is a fun one. Despite all the technical stuff the most important thing is that we are having fun, enjoying ourselves, yes wanting to win sure, but that is not as important as being out there doing our best and enjoying it.

  • 26/02/12 Coldean Colts U10 V South Malling

    Game 1

Result - Coldean Colts 1 2 South Malling

Good game against the best team in the league. We did well as I recall it was one way traffic for a lot of the first half but we defended well and held them to a one goal lead. They scored an early one in the second half and we replied with one of our own. Cass got himself on the score sheet and overall it was a gutsy performance from the boys.

    Game 2

Result - Coldean Colts 0 2 South Malling

Another good perfromance from team 2 two nil is a respectable result against South Malling. Well done to all.

  • 19/02/12v Coldean Colts U10 V Saltdean

    Game 1.

Team 1. Aston, Adam, Cass, Jack, Blaine, Francis, Rory

Result Coldean Colts 5 1 Saldean (FT)

    (HT 3 1)

    Cass 12

    Francis 15

    Blain 18

    Francis 25

    Blain 31

Referee - Grant - (The man who thinks Siberia is a nice place for a holiday but it is a tad warm there!)

    Game 1.

A deceptive day climatically speaking. The brilliance of the sun disguised the bite of a chill wind. The brilliance was matched on the pitch. We played Saltdean on a warmer day on their ground ,'the postage stamp' ,and they beat us. It was somewhat controversial, as a ball that appeared to be a yard over the line was called in despite the fact that we had all stopped playing. This was not to be a repeat. We gave Saltdean a lesson today.

We were solid in all areas of the pitch and they really did not trouble us at all. They did manage to get a goal but only because we do that thing that we like to do which is give the opposition loads of room to tee up a shot. They have some good players particularly their very quick number three who caused us a few problems at the back. It is a testament to our all round team play that we dealt with him and them comfortably.

We had Cass on the scoresheet with a great shot from 25 yards (well everything to scale) that the keeper could not handle, That is after a great free kick that nearly did the same. Good thinking from Blain to knock the ball back to him. Great moment for Cass and the team celebrated as one, great to see.

Francis and Blain were immense and were rewarded with two goals a piece. Rory troubled the defenders with some mazy runs finding himself chopped once or twice. Adam and Jack were resolute in midfield and defence as all the boys worked hard to get a really good result. The big challenge is ahead, the biggest! South Malling! We were beaten a bit too easily by them in Lewes. We have nothing to fear from them. We know they are a physical team we need to stand up to them and play the sort of passing football we know we can, Everybody needs to be on top form, so early to bed on Saturday and a good breakfast for South Malling, Round Two, on Sunday. Thanks to all parents, coaches, Saltdean and all the lads.

    Game 2.

Team 2. Kobi, Ash, Brandon, Ollie, Jonah, Louis, Zak (Oliver), Conrad,

Result Coldean Colts 1 3 Saltdean (FT)

    Referee - Grant - Brrrrr!

    Game 2.

We were under a lot of pressure from the start here. Fortunately Ash, Kobi and Brandon were able to soak it up. Zak looked immense making some great runs, using silky skills to skip past the Saltdean defence but he can't so it all on his own. The forwards need to be shouting for the ball. Louis made some great runs too but a bit more passing in the final third might have seen a diiferent result. As it was Saltdean scored two in quick succession. Jonah Zak and Louis looked sharp up front but the final ball was thwarted every time. Brandon who seemed to be playing a bit further up had a few good chances but again the defence blocked or the keeper got there first! Conrad also looked good in midfield and combined well with Jonah and Louis. It was hard going and Zak made way for Oliver to change things up front. Oliver was immediately into his stride and put himself about but it was one way traffic at this stage and he was picking up scraps. Eventually a combination of Conrad, Brandon and Louis managed to slip a perfectly weighted ball to Oliver who took no time to deliver a rocket to the back of the net. 2 1. The fightback! Maybe! Saltdean changed it about and brought on their devilishly quick number three. If you ever wanted to see an example of counter attacking football you did not need to look any further. From Coldean attack to Saltdean attack in seconds and the number three was away and would not be caught. 3 1, that hurt. If you throw men forward from midfield to get the equaliser you run the risk of being caught, we were. We were down but not quite out. Zak came back on and his pace and skill saw him off down the wing with a beautiful run. Oliver was inside, open, unmarked but Zak was getting pushed out. He could not get the ball in and attempted a shot which was wide of the mark. Once again we need to call out the players name screaming for a pass if the position is better. It was not to be today but it is coming together out there a great performance from all concerned.
